Lockheed Martin (LM) has announced to the American specialized media that they developed a new version of the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) which, as proved in a recent flight test, doubles its current range. The name of the new missile is JAGM-Medium Range, or JAGM-MR, and, in accordance with the company’s report, it traveled 16 km in a flight test on November 16th at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California (USA). The longer-range capability was defined as critical by the Army and the Marine Corps in order to achieve greater standoff from enemy locations, as declared by the Program Management Director of Air-to-Ground missile systems at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, Joey Drake. Indeed, in the last years, US Army has repeatedly stated its requirements for longer-range munitions, particularly for its helicopter fleet, able to replace the AGM-114 HELLFIRE and the Israeli company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems’ SPIKE Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) missiles. In the JAGM-MR version, Lockheed Martin also incorporated a tri-mode seeker that pairs a low-cost imaging sensor with the seeker’s semi-active laser and millimeter wave sensors, addressing another specific requirement of the US Army that was originally dropped for containing the costs. The previous version of the JAGM was declared ready for full-rate production at the end of August 2022, after overcoming some difficulties in targeting maritime targets, and it will be fielded, together with the MR version, on AH-64E APACHE attack helicopters and Marine Corps AH-1Z VIPER ones. In accordance with Drake's declaration, the company expects that the JAGM-MR will quickly create interest with other international and domestic customers, in particular if LM may be able to contain the additional capability at a cost that is “very close” to current JAGM production. The first country to show interest in the new version has been the United Kingdom, which has already signed an agreement to receive the JAGM. Now the next challenge is to work closely with the Army, which has the important role to allocate the required funds to move from development to production as quickly as possible, noting that LM invested to develop the upgrades with no external investment.
