Israel speeds up the ARROW 4 program fearing Iranian Hypersonic threat 24/11/2022 | Fabio Di Felice

Despite the lack of official intelligence confirming it, due to the Iran’s recent declaration that it has successfully developed a hypersonic weapon system, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have “indirectly” announced that, in the last 2 months, they have begun accelerating efforts to develop measures to counter the potential of this new threat. As already reported by RID last year, the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO), the Directorate for the Research and Development (MAFAT) of the Israel MOD, together with the US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) have started work on developing the advanced ARROW-4 interceptor for facing the new emerging threat. In accordance with multiple sources of Israeli intelligence, deceived by the military nuclear program, Teheran has been trying to get relevant technologies, especially from North Korea, for reaching the ambitious capability. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Division Chief, announced during the last weeks that Iran has succeeded in developing and testing a hypersonic missile able to penetrate all the current missile defense systems. Despite the regime propaganda, and an announcement declared unfounded by the Pentagon, if confirmed, the new weapon would be a more dangerous threat than the SEJIL medium-range ballistic missile, claimed to reach Tel Aviv in less than seven minutes. In accordance with some Israeli analysts, the hypothesis are that the new missile will have the shape like the known systems of China’s DF-17 or North Korea’s HGV, both missiles endowed of hypersonic glide vehicles with a speed up to Mach 12. The Israeli defense industries are working hard in order to overcome some significant challenges in facing the new threat across all the areas of detection, tracking and kinetic encounter and interception. If confirmed the new weapon system may pose a significant threat not only for Israel, but also for all US troops in the Gulf area, including the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet.
