US Army improves funds for missiles by 62% over the FY25 26/03/2024 | Fabio Di Felice

In accordance with the US Army budget proposal submitted over the US FY25, the service is planning to cut the purchase of aircraft, weapons, and tracked combat vehicles, while increasing funds for missile capabilities by 62% compared to the FY24.

Indeed, the total amount allocated to missile capability purchasing will be $6.2 billion - on a total of $185.9 billion proposal - including additional funds for several programs. The new missile capabilities’ funds allocation will boost several programs including the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), Mid-Range Capability (MRC), Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW), JAVELIN anti-tank weapons, and Guided MLRS Rocket (GMLRS). After the official announcement of the budget proposal, as confirmation of its numbers, US Under Secretary of the Army, Gabe Camarillo, talking with the media, highlighted the US Army’s key priorities: Long-Range Precision Fires and Integrated Air and Missile Defence.

Going deep into the submitted US Army official budget proposal compared to FY24:

- GMLRS will see a rise from $886.4 million to $1.2 billion, with a 38% increase;

- the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon program ($744.2 million) will be 374% higher than the FY24 ($156.8 million);

- the PrSM program will see the investment increase by 25.6% and the quantity by 110% with $482.5 million for 230 units in FY25 compared to $384.7 million to acquire 110 units in FY24

- for the JAVELIN ATG weapon systems, the proposal sees increased funds by 63% and the number of systems to be procured increased by 71%;

- the MRC effort will go from $169.5 million (FY24) to $233 million (FY25), recording a growth of 37%.

- and, finally, the ‘first place’ is occupied by the Lower Tier Air and Missile Defence with a terrific increase of 3,165%, moving from $15.8 million in FY24 and $516.8 million in FY25.

In terms of cuts, the programs that will suffer more are the Armoured Multi-Purpose Vehicle (AMPV), PALADIN Integrated Management (PIM), and the modernization of the STRYKER fleet. For aviation platforms, the main affected program will be the AH-64 APACHE Block IIIA.
